SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University invites our campus and the broader Brooklyn community to come together for the HEAT Program’s World AIDS Day Symposium: HEAT’s Legacy of Healing and Hope on Friday, December 5, 2025, from 3:30 PM to 7:30 PM in the Alumni Auditorium. Interactive elements and refreshments will begin at 3:30 PM, followed by a formal ceremony starting at 5:15 PM.
World AIDS Day is a time of remembrance, solidarity, and renewed purpose. It is a moment to honor the lives lost, uplift those who continue the work, and reaffirm our shared commitment to compassionate, equitable, youth-centered care. For more than two decades, the HEAT Program has stood at the forefront of HIV prevention, treatment, and support for teens and young adults in Brooklyn, ensuring every young person receives the care, respect, and opportunity they deserve.
This year’s symposium offers an evening of reflection, connection, and celebration. Attendees will experience performances, a panel discussion, and special moments recognizing HEAT Program staff whose dedication has spanned over twenty years of service to the community. Their impact has shaped generations of young people and continues to strengthen Brooklyn’s path toward health equity.
A highlight of the event will be the STAR Program Survivors’ Quilt, created by STAR patients and first assembled more than ten years ago. The quilt has recently been updated by STAR patients and staff and serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience, courage, and collective history of our community. Members of the Downstate community are encouraged to view this meaningful piece as part of the day’s observance.
This gathering is open to students, faculty, staff, partners, neighbors, and all who wish to stand in unity on this important day. Light refreshments will be provided.
