Meet Liz Smith of HEAT's Project Harmony: Creating Safe Spaces, Celebrating Every Identity

"I am that Black person, Caribbean person, queer person who needed this safe space to know that I could be all those identities—and queer."

When you walk through the doors of HEAT in East Flatbush, you’re stepping into something more than a clinic—you’re entering a movement. And at the heart of that movement is Elizabeth “Liz” Smith (they/them), the dynamic LGBTQ+ Program Coordinator for Project Harmony.

A proud advocate, educator, and connector, Liz brings more than experience to their role—they bring lived truth.

“I’m here to make sure that young people know they have the power to take care of their sexual health,” says Liz. “Especially in New York, where those resources exist—we just need to make sure our communities know they’re available.”

At HEAT, Liz’s work focuses on affirming and empowering queer youth, particularly in East Flatbush’s Black, brown, and Caribbean immigrant communities—where access to culturally competent, LGBTQ+ inclusive health care and resources has historically been limited.

"The outreach we do in the community for queer people is vital. We're here, and we're here for them."

HEAT stands for Health & Education Alternatives for Teens—but in practice, it stands for hope, equity, access, and transformation. From clinical care to community events, the HEAT team is on the ground, building real connections that inspire change.

As Liz shares, “HEAT is two things: it’s a clinic, yes—but it’s also community. It’s where you come to get support, to be seen, and to feel part of something.”

Whether they’re facilitating a workshop, organizing a wellness fair, or just holding space for someone to be fully themselves, Liz’s mission is clear: normalize inclusion. Celebrate identities. Champion mental health.

"You are not alone. It’s something we hear often, but it needs to be repeated. There is a community out here willing to welcome you with open arms."

At HEAT, inclusion isn’t a buzzword—it’s a practice. From pronouns to peer support, from STI testing to self-love, the clinic and its team show up every day to remind young people that they matter.

So whether you’re a teen looking for answers, a parent seeking understanding, or someone in search of a community that gets it—HEAT is for you.
